Cultural Festivals and All You Need To Know

So if you have watch any Anime or read any manga you will know what a cultural festival is!

If not, don't worry I got you!

What is a Cultural Festival?

Cultural festivals (文化祭 bunkasai) is an annual event held by schools (Elementary to University - High School/University tend to be more popular to attend). These events are typically open to the public, which is great for perspective studnets, parents, and foreigners like myself! Festivals are held to display the students' learning, but many people visit a festival as a recreational diversion. Alumni often take the opportunity to visit schools they once attended. Food is served, and often classrooms or gymnasiums are transformed into temporary restaurants or cafés. Dances, concerts and plays may be performed by individual volunteers or by various school clubs, such as the dance club, the literature club, the orchestra club, the band club, and the drama club.

Cultural festivals are intended to be a fun event, but are also the only opportunity each year for students to see what life is like in other schools. They are also intended to enrich people's lives by increasing social interaction and fostering community ties.

When are they held?

For the most part these event are held during November 3rds (or as close as possible). Typically it is a Saturday early in November. Depending on the type of school and the festivals popularity they may adjust their dates. Legitimately, if you search "November 3rd Japan" you will only get information about Cultural festivals!

What to expect?

There many things to look forward to here! There is Singing, Dancing, Performance, Fashion Shows, Cafes, Arcades, Photo booths, Art Galleries, and so much more! Do be sure to bring some money to buy food, that the students made, and to help support the different classes and clubs.

My experience.

Personally, I always spend about 1000-2000円 at my studnets cultural festival because I really want to help support them.

I am always the only foreigner at the school. For some reason the ALT at this particular school doesn't go?! Why? I don't know.

So I alway have 3 or 4 studnets following me around cause they are so surprised to see me! Tall, blonde, and blue eyed! Even some of the teachers will come talk to me!
